Refined carbohydrate foods were swapped for complex carbohydrate foods. i.e. they ate complex carbohydrates, not refined carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates can be found in foods made from whole grains, (eg. whole grain flours and products made from them), and in many vegetables, low sugar fruits and beans.

The most widely touted gout diet for sufferers of "the disease of kings," is the low purine gout diet. The cause of gout theory behind it is that because uric acid is made from purines, and because uric acid is the gout culprit, purine intake from foods and beverages should be restricted.

There isn't space in this article to explain more about the difference between complex and refined carbohydrates. If you're not sure, the subject is easily researched on the Internet. For example, do an Internet search for "Glycemic Index," or "Glycemic Load."

Gout is not a very common disease and it does not affect anyone. However, there are some factors of risk when it comes to gout. Here are some of the most important risk factors in gout cases: Genetics - studies have shown that almost one of four people who suffer from gout have family history of this medical condition; this is to say that more than fifteen percent of all gout patients, have gout in their family history;

Strawberries' flavonoids are anthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols and flavonols. Quercetin, which has been thought to reduce uric acid levels, is a flavonol. There is some Quercetin in strawberries.

The anthocyanidin profile of strawberries is not exactly the same as that of cherries, but sweet cherries and strawberries share a couple of them.

The most quoted historical character who advocated strawberries for gout was the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778). He said that his strawberries-only diet had cured or alleviated his gout. Accounts vary as to what he precisely said, but there is no doubt that he thought strawberries were helpful, and in his time he was a famous and respected botanist. So he knew a lot about strawberries. But don't eat a strawberries-only diet. This is a crash diet and crash diets are now thought to probably increase gout attacks. You can easily get strawberries into a low purine gout diet. Or into a carbohydrate restricted diet, such as the Zone diet, because they are moderate on the Glycemic Index.

Some studies have shown that Vitamin C does reduce uric acid levels, which makes Vitamin C for gout a good idea. ??In these studies the lowest amount required to do this was 500 mg daily. It's not hard to get 500 mg of Vitamin C naturally from foods and drinks.

Refined and simple carbohydrates are found in foods made from refined grains (for example refined flours which are the basis for pasta, breads, cakes, biscuits (cookies) pies, pastries); white rice; and most cereals. And notably from sugars with the exception of fruit sugar,(fructose) and galactose. Simple carbohydrates include corn and other syrups, table sugar and honey; candies (sweets); processed foods with added sugar; and some fruits and vegetables.

There is another cause of gout theory, which is that excess uric acid (hyperuricemia) is the result of insulin resistance, the pre type 2 diabetes condition. Insulin resistance in gout has been the subject of many studies. Simply put, insulin resistance is the condition where the cells become more resistant to allowing insulin to deliver glucose (mainly broken down from carbohydrate in foods) to them, for the purpose of energy creation. It's as if the jailer refuses to open the door of the cell. It's one of the causes of excess insulin. Excess insulin has been found in a number of studies to inhibit uric acid excretion as well as causing other problems.

There are several conditions that can result in gout, but the primary cause is an abnormally high level of uric acid in the blood, either from the body's producing too much or from the body's not excreting it properly. Gout is more common in men than in women, possibly because the female body eliminates uric acid more efficiently. The disease often strikes middle-aged males, especially men who are overweight and drink too much alcohol. But healthy people can develop gout, too. Gender - gender is another risk factor in gout cases, unfortunately one that we have no control over; men are more at risk of developing gout than women are; men who are over twenty years old can develop gout; however, studies have shown that most men had their first gout attack somewhere between the age of thirty five to forty; there are no known case of men who have suffered from a gout attack in their twenties; if you thought that men are the only one who can suffer form gout, then you were wrong; even if this disease is mostly found in men, women can also suffer from gout; after menopause, the level of uric acid rises in women and they can develop gout; however, women mostly have their first gout symptoms around the age of fifty, whereas men can develop them as early as in their thirty' s;

4. Take a nonprescription anti-inflammatory. Inflammation causes swelling, which worsens pain. Both ibuprofen and aspirin are anti-inflammatories, but when taken at low levels, aspirin may actually make the pain worse, so reach for the ibuprofen when treating gout.

Anyone going on the Zone diet will have their personal daily carbohydrate, protein, and fat requirement. How to discover it is explained in Barry Sears' "Enter the Zone" book. The amount of protein you can eat determines the amounts of carbohydrates and unsaturated fats, in the 4:3:3 proportions, you can eat. Why the 4:3:3 rule is important is also explained in the book. If you know about soccer, you can think of the 4:3:3 rule as the commonly used soccer team formation. Or, another way of putting it, is to say that calories from protein are 0.75 (75%) of calories from carbohydrate and calories from fat are in the same proportion as calories from protein. Getting almost to 4:3:3 is allowed.

It's a pity that more isn't known about strawberries for gout. But all these hints and signs, and in the case of Vitamin C for gout, studies too, do suggest that a daily bowl of strawberries is a good idea for a gout diet, especially when combined with other natural remedies for gout.

1. Don't put any weight on the joint. This usually means staying off your feet as much as possible until the episode subsides. Any pressure you put on the joint will increase the pain and possibly damage the area further.

There is one more health positive fact about strawberries. Their proanthocyanidin (abbreviated as PCO's or OPC's) levels are high, much higher than in cherries.

Alcohol - another risk factor when it comes to gout is alcohol, mostly the abuse of alcohol; alcohol increases the uric acid level that is responsible for gout; alcohol abuse is mostly related with younger gout patients;

5. Avoid icing or heating the area. Unlike other types of pain, gout doesn't respond well to heat or ice therapy. 6. Wear comfortable shoes. For gout sufferers, styles that offer a lot of room for the toes are the best choice.
